Meet the Expert
Dr. Smith
Dr. Smith has spent 18 years in the diversity, equity and inclusion space advocating for underrepresented and marginalized groups, educating professionals and students and consulting with various institutions. She has been a consultant to school districts, non-profit, government, and professional organizations needing to improve practices specific to diverse populations. This work includes climate assessments, diversity and inclusion and cross-cultural engagement assessments, program design and evaluation, and professional development workshops.
Monica has more than 20 years of direct social work practice and supervisory experience in child welfare, family services and mental health agencies. Dr. Smith has served in administrative roles in higher education since 2004. Prior to becoming a full-time administrator, she was a faculty member primarily teaching Social Work and social justice courses. Monica currently serves as the inaugural Vice President of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Augustana College in Rock Island, IL where she provides strategic, academic, and operational leadership for diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.
Dr. Smith owns Smith Education and Consulting Services. She is the creator of The Smith Approach™, an innovative approach to diversity and inclusion which that encompasses a unique perspective and adaptation of social work skills.
